WhAT IS A BRAND?

That’s a bloody good question!

"If marketing is what you tell people about your business.

Branding is what people say about your business when you’re not in the room."

“Jeff Bezos”

Brand vs Branding

Brand: (noun)

A brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service, or organisation.

Marty Neumeier

Branding: (verb)

The art and science of influencing perception about a product, service or organisation.

Sean Tambagahan

If a brand is how people feel deep down, then branding is the act of shaping that feeling . Through brand design, we have an opportunity to help influence how the public perceives a person, product, service, or business through all kinds of experiences. That’s why branding is everything! It’s about being intentional in every interaction and communicating a clear message at every touchpoint.

People often get confused about branding because of the way it’s defined. Design professionals sometimes use industry jargon as if everyone knows what they’re talking about. Here are a couple definitions to help out:

Brand Logo is a graphic symbol that represents a brand visually. While it’s a key part of brand identity, it lacks the depth of brand strategy, personality, and the emotional connections that define the full brand experience.

Brand Identity is the visual and sensory elements that represent a brand, including its logo, colours, typography, and imagery. It's what makes a brand recognisable and shapes how it's perceived by its audience.

Brand Strategy is the plan that defines a brand’s direction, goals, and how it will connect with its target audience. It includes the brand's mission, values, positioning, and long-term vision, guiding decisions on how to build and grow the brand over time.
